10:08p - 300 - lols
Well, late I know, but went to see 300 today.. Which was a lot of fun.. (ty Angus & Tom)
I really liked it for what it is.. A campy comic adaptation which doesn't claim to be historically accurate. Beefcake.
Some historians didn't like it much.. Nor do a lot of Iranians.. I can understand why, too.. The thing is though, I never knew anything even approximately similar to any of this stuff happened, and had no idea who the Spartans were - and likely would never have read up on it had the film not come out.. Misinformation better than no information? I guess it is if you assume your audience isn't idiots.. (possibly a dangerous thing, particularly if you're target audience is teenage males)
Hmm.. How many people go to the cinema and come home accepting it as factually accurate without asking questions? I once got told off online by some Italian guy for my peoples' terrible treatment towards the Scottish.. (he'd recently watched Braveheart).. .. Wah.
... Aaaanyway. My biggest problems with 300 (if I'm being picky) were some strange CG (elephants, rhino - didn't look realistic at all.) and overuse of greenscreen. Well, it's not the use of greenscreen that bothers me, but the "glow" they use to fuzz out the edges. .. Also, it didn't seem to know quite what it was.. Was it being a historical (made-up) epic ala Gladiator, or some sort of widdly electric guitar beefcake asskicking film. The two didn't mix perfectly.. Maybe if they'd had the orchestral soundtrack throughout and less of the "blam! I pump you up like a trailer scored by Hans Zimmer!!" craziness it wouldn't have seemed so weird. Didn't make it bad.. Just.. Odd.
The fight scenes (most of the film) ruled though. Lots of dismemberment. Yay!
.. And it's almost inspired me to try Frank Frazetta-style fantasy art.. Hmm.
