Apple stuff
When I updated to 10.4.4 I got the single most marked speed increase I think I've ever got out of an OS update apart from when upgrading from Jaguar to Panther. Impressive!

All the swooshy effects behave much better now.

I ordered iLife '06.. Curse you Apple and your annual software rollout. Seems worth it though as I missed '05, and I'm using Garageband to make ZH's music.

Early benchmarks (seemed to) show the new Macbook Pro is faster than my dual CPU G5 powermac... Hehe. That's pretty impressive for a little laptop.. This thing doesn't exactly feel slow. ed: May have spoken too soon actually. Either way it's fast.

Has anyone managed to get one of those macbooks to dual-boot with windoze yet? That would be cool... Huh huh huh huh...

Nope the new macs don't support BIOS, so it's going to take a few weeks I suspect.. People have only just started getting their new intel imacs.. The announcement of the macbooks was a bit premature, they're haven't started shipping yet.. The benchmarks that were released were made at MWSF on pre-release models. :D I'll keep you posted though as I'm interested in the dual compatibility thing too.

Microsoft are working on an intel VirtualPC, and there's a Darwin port of Wine in the works.. Wine is a transparent (when it works) compatibility layer thing for Linux which lets you run windows stuff - even nicer if it works properly.. I'd much rather be able to run windows apps without actually having to install windows!

I'm thinking of a work laptop definitely- we have clients who use macs, the geek dept have just invented a new editing plugin dooberator that's cross-platform; i'm testing it on mac because no-one else here knows how to use one. It would be very cool to be able to run a training session on the same laptop flipping from mac to windoze. Hey! Some clever bod needs to work out how to be logged in on both at the same time; then you could just user-switch... How cool would that be?! [/geek]

Oddly enough they've been pondering that idea on MacRumors.. something to do with some new feature of the new intel cpus or something is supposed to make that a possibility.. might be the next gen 64 bit cpus which'll be in the powermacs though i can't remember. :)

If virtual pc gets fast enough, and if it's the same as the current version is.. you could have it full screen and Alt-tab between them.. that works ok too in the meantime.. VPC is fast enough for most non graphicy software really already.. So the intel native version should be pretty special.. !
